Language Guide

This Language Guide is a resource for Emory communicators, showing us how to use the Emory university communication strategy to inform the work we do every day.

This guide is intended to be used alongside the Emory Guidelines, to ensure that as you create your communication vehicle, you will maintain continuity between your message and other elements, such as art and photography, design and typography.

Communicating Our Essence

We use our communication pillars, knowledge of our audience, and tone words to inform our messaging when we talk about the work of the university. Though Emory’s communication strategy has one clear voice, the groups of people who interact with it are wide and varied. To help understand who they are and how to reach them, we have placed them into five categories.
